About Us – Hamaari Ummeed (Trust)
On 21 December 2003, the bitter cold night kept me awake till 12:30 am. I wandered around Maa Kaali Temple and what I saw broke my heart – an 8‑9‑year‑old child crying, lying on a chair, burning with fever, dressed in filthy clothes, unbathed for days. The priest, it was whispered, had beaten him.
With the help of a few street friends, I brought the boy to my coaching centre, spent the night there, and the next morning took him to a doctor. After three days of treatment he returned to the temple, but I could not turn away.
We began visiting the temple twice or four times a week. More children joined, many addicted to alcohol, gutka, beedi and cheap fluids. We explained the dangers, and within a year most reduced their intake; Monu and Asif completely gave up drugs.
Seeing the need, we launched street‑based educational activities in a nearby park. Police and priest harassment forced us to look for partners. After convincing the children, we admitted Monu and Asif to Bal Sahyog NGO (2005). Both completed 10th, 12th and earned a diploma in computer science, inspiring us to fight for policy change for street and homeless children.
In 2004, we linked up with Swami Agnivesh ji, Anhad (Trust), Bonded Liberation Front, Aman Biradari, Centre for Equity Studies, and the Office of the Special Commissioner of Supreme Court. In October 2004, a meeting with Harsh Mander and Shabnam Hashmi ignited a volunteer movement for democracy and secular India.
Within a year, with community youth volunteers, we opened two children’s shelter homes – one in Delhi, one in Gurgaon.
In 2009, we formalised Hamaari Ummeed (Trust), a campaign for social justice, harmony & peace. The first project Ummeed Home sheltered 15 vulnerable elder boys, all of whom were later placed in respectable jobs.
Today, Hamaari Ummeed is launching the Hamaari Ummeed Academy (HUA), a national resource and learning centre for life‑skill education, bridge education, care and rights of street children. The academy aims to transform tens of thousands of street children and vulnerable youth into happy, responsible, well‑educated citizens living with dignity.
